Modernizing a mission-critical COBOL/IMS mainframe application 

 

A Fortune 500 client was implementing a data center transition project when one mainframe application jeopardized it. Although several attempts to modernize the application were taken, ​none resulted​​​ in a successful transition.  

The client turned to Zoreza global with a request to assist them and another vendor in quality assurance on a consulting basis. Eventually, we took over the migration and:

Any mainframe modernization undertaking has to address the following three risks: 

  • Exceeded budget and/or missed deadlines. This is usually the result of an unclear or unrealistic modernization scope. Therefore, mitigating this risk requires a proper assessment of the modernization efforts required to reach the desired state, as well as proper coordination between the C-suite and IT leadership. 
  • Failure to meet expectations. When the chosen approach isn’t the most suitable one, modernization results can fail to attain the set goals. To avoid this scenario, the current and desired states have to be carefully assessed to identify the most optimal modernization approach. 
  • Functionality deterioration. This can come in the form of broken dependencies, errors and bugs, or business logic and data lost in the modernization process. Addressing this risk means paying extra attention to dependencies, interoperability and data flows.
